FAQ

Ticketing

How much are tickets?

State Theatre film tickets are $10 for most evening shows and $7 for matinees (before 6pm Monday through Friday, excludes holidays). Tickets for Students, Seniors, and Children under 12 are $8. Tickets for Michigan & State Theater members are $7.50. Late night & midnight movies are $8.

Special ticket prices will apply for special film presentations and non-State Theatre-sponsored films.

How do I purchase tickets?

The best way to purchase tickets is online! With the introduction of our No-Stress Reserved Seating at the State, you can pick your preferred seats hours or days in advance; then you can take your time with dinner, grabbing your concessions, listening to our new 1940s-style jukebox, or enjoying a drink with friends—all while knowing that the seats you selected are waiting for you when you’re ready to take them.

Can I still buy tickets at the theater right before the show?

You can. We will have two agent-managed stations within the State Theatre.

How far in advance can I purchase my movie tickets?

For our first run films, showtimes will be available beginning most Tuesdays on our website. Gold Card members will be able to reserve their tickets as soon as showtimes are available; all other tickets will be available to purchase most Wednesdays at 10 AM. These times are subject to change based on program availability and holiday schedules; any changes to the schedule will be posted.

For repertory and series programming, tickets will be available when the show is announced.

I received a promo code/voucher. How do I redeem it for a ticket?

Paper vouchers can be redeemed at the agent-managed stations in the State Theatre. They must be exchanged for a ticket prior to entering the auditorium.

Promo codes can be redeemed for tickets online. Look for a button that says “Know a promotion code?” on the ticket selection screen. After you enter the promo code, the Ticket Redemption option will become available. Proceed with your transaction.

Can I buy tickets to State films at the Michigan, or vice versa?

You can, though please know that it may take longer during busy periods at either theater.

Do you offer group discounts?

We do! Group tickets are $7, for a minimum of 10 people. Please contact the box office for assistance with any group ticket purchase.

Programming

What kind of movies do you play?

Our goal is to play the movies you have to see—whether that’s the best new independent Art House film, a classic from a legendary Hollywood director, cult favorites like THE ROOM and HAROLD AND MAUDE, or the latest film that absolutely everyone is talking about.

Are you going to show ____ movie?

We might! Our program is constantly changing as our programmer works with distributors to bring us the best films for our audience. Check back regularly to see what’s been added to the schedule.

Are you still going to show midnight movies?

We wouldn’t be the State Theatre if we didn’t!

When do movie times come out?

For our first run films, showtimes will be available beginning most Tuesdays on our website. Gold Card members will be able to reserve their tickets as soon as showtimes are available; all other tickets will be available to purchase most Wednesdays at 10 AM. These times are subject to change based on program availability and holiday schedules; any changes to the schedule will be posted.

Do you still show film prints?

Not at this time; we plan to be able to do so in the future!

Membership

Will my Michigan Theater membership still work at the State?

It will!

What memberships are available?

We have lots of membership levels! Check out the full list on our membership page

Venue

How old is the State Theatre?
The State Theatre opened on March 18, 1942.
Is the State handicap accessible?

The new State Theatre will have an elevator from the entryway to the lobby on the second floor, and keyed access to the upper level for entrance to the third and fourth theaters. There will also be an escalator from the second floor lobby up to the upper levels as well. In addition, each theater is equipped with wheelchair accessible seating options.

We will also have two systems to aid those with hearing impairments.  One is a “hearing loop” that will be installed the first week in January.  The other is an infrared system with closed captioning devices and that should be installed by the first of the year.

How many theaters do you have? How many seats in each?

There will be 4 screens in the State Theatre. Each auditorium will be a different size: 133 seats for Auditorium 1, 100 seats for Auditorium 2, 49 seats for Auditorium 3, and 78 seats for Auditorium 4.

Can I rent the State Theatre for a private event?

Absolutely! For rental inquiries head over to our contact page and fill out the form.

Attending a Film

What time does the Box Office open?

The box office will open 1 hour prior to the first show of the day.

How early should I arrive for my movie?
If you plan to purchase your tickets at the box office immediately prior to the screening, we recommend arriving at least half an hour in advance–the intimate nature of our new theaters makes it more likely that screenings will sell out. If you purchase your tickets ahead of time online, you can take your time–all seats at the State Theatre are reserved, and the seats you select will be waiting for you when you arrive.

Parking

Where do I park?
There are several Republic Parking meters and structures within a few blocks of the theater. You can learn more about where to find them here.
Do you validate parking?
Basic, Premium, and Gold Card members can have their Republic Parking tickets validated (for up to 2 hours). Please see Guest Services.

Support

I would like to purchase a seat in the State Theatre. Who do I contact?

Can I still donate to the State and Michigan Project?

Our project is ongoing, and we value your continued support. You can make your 100% tax-deductible donation here.

Will my donation to the State Theatre be used for the Michigan Theater?
All donations toward the State & Michigan Project will go toward meeting the goal of our campaign–to preserve and maintain both the State & Michigan Theaters in order to ensure they will be even stronger entertainment centers for generations to come. The Michigan Theater has been well used by over 6 million visitors since its last renovation and requires significant technical updates and operational improvements–your donation will help make that happen.
